How To Start An MMA Career

At Midwest MMA, at least once a week somebody emails and asks how to get into events or start an MMA career, even though I plainly state not to use the contact form for that reason. So, for those of you that keep ignoring me I am going to put into a page what I would say to any of those people, if I'd respond at all.

Train, train, train...

First, train hard, learn the art, do yourself a favor and don't walk in off the street after you won your first street fight thinking you'll be an MMA superstar, it doesn't typically work that way. Additionally, any promoter that runs legitimate shows will hopefully require the people that fight in their events to have some sort of training for their own good, and the good of the event.

Keep training, hard, not only in combat, but cardio and strength training. A 5 minute round can take more gas than any spectator could even imagine, you need to be in the best shape possible to fight with any success. These guys that make it look so easy and effortless train non-stop, it's their lives and they train ground fighting, stand up and takedowns. There is a reason it's called "mixed" martial arts.

There is some good advice on picking a gym at Minnesota MMA.

Find a promoter

Every area has their own mixed martial arts scene, however, some areas, be it by local or regional government, has outlawed, or restricted such events. If it is legal in your area, it's simply a matter of finding the players in that scene. Your best bet is to attend events and meet the fighters and promoters. If you heed my first bit of advice this should be easy, as you may be training with some of them.

If you train in a legitimate MMA gym, your trainer will likely know promoters, and know the scene, as well as be able to tell you when you are ready and when you are not. Listen to your trainer.
